New legislation extending Dangerous Dogs Law to make it an offence for a dog to be dangerously out of control in any place, including private property, has been published.
If your dog attacks people at any location including private property and your own home, please be aware that as an owner you may face prosecution. This will provide additional protection for visitors to properties who are at work. For example, postal, utility company and healthcare workers often find that they risk injury where dangerous dogs are resident in a property.
Dog owners should be aware that they face punishments of unlimited fines or prison sentences of up to 2 years if convicted.
It does not seem that trespassers and burglars will be protected in this way.
